Trump’s recent tariff measures have sparked a global debate. In the latest episode of The Hub, moderated by CGTN host Wang Guan, experts engaged in a heated discussion on whether Trump’s tariffs will help restore U.S. economic dominance or deepen its reliance on imports. William Lee, chief economist at the Milken Institute; and Anthony Chan, former chief economist at JPMorgan Chase, contend that Trump is using tariffs as a strategic tool for negotiations on broader non-economic issues such as border security, immigration and drug trafficking. On the other hand, Liu Baocheng, dean of the Center for International Business Ethics at the University of International Business and Economics, argues that American consumers will ultimately bear the cost of these tariffs, while global trade partners are likely to seek market diversification and retaliate with countermeasures. "In the end," he warns, "people will find the U.S. still needs import."
