Asian stock markets tumble on Trump’s tariff plans

US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs on trading partners throughout the world. Trump says the taxes on imports to the US will revive American manufacturing after years of what he calls “cheating” by America’s friends and foes. US stock futures tumbled on the news.

Markets also tumbled across Asia on Thursday morning as traders responded to Trump’s announcement. The region is home to some of America’s biggest trading partners, including China, Japan and South Korea.

Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna has the latest from the White House and Fadi Salameh is in Tokyo where the Nikkei tumbled after opening on Thursday.

Seijiro Takeshita is a Professor of Management and Information of Innovation at the University of Shizuoka in Japan. He says the broader effects of the tariffs are more concerning than the impacts on individual countries.
