Despite a 2018 peace deal, political rivalries, unpaid salaries, and militia violence persist. Oil wealth fuels inequality, visible in Juba’s luxury, while infrastructure crumbles and crops rot. Global sanctions fail to curb corruption, and spillover from Sudan’s war disrupts oil exports. Amidst this, small-scale coffee farmers cling to hope, cultivating high-quality beans as a lifeline. But without stability, even their hard-won gains risk being erased by renewed fighting.
