In any society, healthy competition helps create innovation which can lead to economic growth, better products and other positive outcomes. But can there be such a thing as "too much" competition? The answer, according to Chinese officials, is yes, and the government, enterprises and even individuals are taking action to resist this kind of "over-competition," referred to as ‘neijuan’ in China, a buzzword that has been dominating Chinese social media recently. So what is neijuan? How did it become an obstacle to China’s economic transition? And most importantly: how quickly can China get rid of it?
