It’s another turn of the screw after the U.S. announced it would double down on its tariff measures on April 2, a "Liberation Day," according to U.S. President Donald Trump. Sweeping tariffs have just been unveiled, with a baseline 10 percent tariff on "all trading partners" and so-called reciprocal actions in dozens of countries. Under Trump’s plan, the U.S. will add a new 34 percent tariff on Chinese goods on top of the 20 percent tariff he had already imposed on Beijing in recent months. What outcome does Trump have in mind? And how will the global economy bear the pressure? In this edition of The Hub, Wang Guan talks to Liang Yan, Kremer chair professor in economics at Willamette University and non-resident senior fellow at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center; Rick Dunham, co-director of the Global Business Journalism Program at Tsinghua University; and to John Gong, professor of economics at the University of International Business and Economics, to discuss the rationale behind these sweeping tariffs and the potential repercussions on global trade and the U.S. economy.
