In response to claims made by the U.S. Embassy in Panama about regarding discussions with Panamanian officials on the so-called issue of "preventing Chinese influence and control over the canal area," Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli stated at a press conference on the 20th (local time) that the U.S.’s assertions about "China controlling the canal" are false and have been rejected by Panama.
Martinelli said, "We do not discuss (these) lies."
He also mentioned that he has instructed the Panamanian Foreign Minister to reiterate this position should the topic arise in future talks with the U.S.
