U.S. President Donald Trump signed a plan to impose "reciprocal" tariffs that aims to hit exports from countries that Trump says have trade policies that are unfair to the U.S. The new tariff plan joins the 10 percent across-the-board tariff that went into effect last week on top of other tariffs on Chinese goods and stricter 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum that Trump announced on Monday. The escalation of tariffs has ignited a firestorm of international criticism, exposing the contradictions of a protectionist agenda that claims to protect American jobs while alienating allies, destabilizing global trade and fueling economic self-harm. The global outcry over the American tariffs isn’t just about economics but a referendum on whether the country will lead through partnership or succumb to the myopia of unilateralism.
