Syria’s new president Ahmed Al Sharaa has signed a constitutional declaration. The document will apply during a five-year transition period, which President Al Sharaa says marks ‘a new history for Syria’. The new administration in Damascus says the focus will be on transitional justice, and ensuring crimes committed under the previous Assad regime are prosecuted. Islamic law will be the basis for the legal system, and the law will protect women’s rights to work and education.
