Authorities in Turkiye have arrested the Mayor of Istanbul, a popular opposition figure, along with nearly 100 other people as part of a corruption investigation. Ekrem Imamoglu is due to be named the opposition’s candidate to run against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the 2028 elections. On Tuesday, Istanbul University revoked his degree, saying it was falsely obtained. Imamoglu needs the qualification to register as a presidential candidate.
