3 men offered bail in US$390m fraud case allegedly involving movement of Nvidia chips
Prosecutors told the Singapore State Courts that about US$390 million was involved in the alleged illegal exports of US-controlled Nvidia artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Singaporeans Alan Wei, 48, and Aaron Woon, 40, and 51-year-old Chinese national Li Ming, were charged for fraud over the movement of these chips. They were offered bail of up to S$1 million. Alex Capri, Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the NUS School of Business and author of Techno-nationalism: How it’s Reshaping Trade, Geopolitics and Society, discusses the challenges in enforcing export controls on advanced technology like AI chips. He talks about the potential implications of advanced AI chips falling into the hands of unauthorised entities and some of the tactics used to make false representations in technology sales.
