China to increase government spending in science and technology by 10% to US$55b
In his speech at the opening of the National People’s Congress, Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced plans to increase government spending in science and technology by 10%. Over 398 billion yuan, or US$55 billion, will be set aside for science and technology. It’s the third biggest item in the list of key spending items outlined in the budget report, coming behind expenditure on national defence and debt interest payments. China will also be publishing an AI education White Paper this year, as it pushes to expand its pool of tech talent. Tan Yew Guan reports.
