Constitution allows NMPs to join political parties after stepping down: Shanmugam
Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam said on Monday (Mar 31) that the Constitution “expressly provides” for a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) to join a political party after resigning from the position.
Mr Shanmugam was addressing online speculation that NMPs joining the ruling party were non-partisan, which came on the heels of the resignations of NMPs Raj Joshua Thomas and Dr Syed Harun Taha Alhabsyi on Feb 14. Mr Thomas has since joined the PAP as a member, while Dr Syed Harun has been seen with Nee Soon advisers.
Mr Shanmugam was speaking at the Ahmad Ibrahim Mosque in Nee Soon GRC, where Dr Syed Harun and ex-PAP Hougang branch chairman Jackson Lam were also present. #GE2025
