Israeli PM Netanyahu’s visit to White House aimed at seeking flexibility on US tariffs, says analyst
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised on Monday (Apr 7) to eliminate Israel’s trade surplus with the United States, after US President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs last week. Netanyahu was the first foreign leader to meet with Trump in the Oval Office following the tariff rollout that hammered global financial markets. Politics professor Stephen Zunes, director of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of San Francisco, tells CNA’s Asia First that Netanyahu may be looking for some degree of flexibility after Israel agreed to lift minor duties it had previously imposed on US imports. He also talks about the possibilities of new deals regarding the war in Gaza, and why Iran may prefer indirect negotiations with the US over a new nuclear agreement.
