Pakistan pursuing closer trade relations with Gulf member states
Pakistan is pursuing closer trade relations with member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as part of broader efforts to bolster its fragile economy. An advantage for Pakistan is the Gwadar port in the southwest, which is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Gwadar bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen major shipping disruptions due to Houthi attacks. This alternative route for Gulf trade to Central Asia is a strategic advantage over India, which lacks similar access. Pakistan’s trade with Gulf nations stood at more than US$19 billion last year.
