Second Minister for Education Maliki Osman on upskilling for ITE graduates
ITE graduates will get more support to develop their skills and access good jobs. The ITE Progression Award (IPA), which provides ITE graduates with a total of S$15,000 to upskill to a diploma early in their careers, is being extended. From June, it will cover courses under the Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) system – beyond those offered by ITE and polytechnics. The IPA was launched last year and by the end of March 2025, around S$90 million would have been awarded to about 12,000 ITE graduates. Second Minister for Education Maliki Osman gave these details in parliament on Thursday (Mar 6).
Support for students with special educational needs will also be stepped up. A national special education (SPED) curriculum was established last year, more digital tools will be used in SPED schools and more will be done to build up expertise among SPED educators. An increasing number of students with special educational needs are progressing to post-secondary education, including ITE, said Dr Maliki. ITE will expand a programme that prepares them for and places them in internship roles.
