Trump’s tariff math “astonishing”: Former White House official
How US President Donald Trump’s administration derived at tariffs for each trading partner seems to be simple math: Take a country’s trade deficit with the US and divide that by the total value of imports from that country, then half that. For example, the US’ trade deficit with the EU was US$235.6 billion in 2024. Divide that by US$605.8 billion in imports to get 39 per cent. Divide that number by two and Europe was hit by a 20 per cent tariff. Former White House official Monica Gorman said she found the formula "head scratching". She tells CNA’s Asia Tonight there’s so much more to trade policy than just a country’s trading deficit.
