US, Indian officials hold high-stakes trade talks in New Delhi as Trump tariffs loom
Indian and US officials are meeting for three days of high-stakes trade talks in New Delhi. This, as US President Donald Trump is set to impose new tariffs next week, although he has hinted at possible exemptions. One focus of the talks is market access. Washington is pressing New Delhi to lower high tariff barriers across all American goods, while India is reportedly open to cutting duties on more than half of US imports worth US$23 billion. In return, the US may offer trade concessions, including quota mechanisms to protect Indian farmers and small industries. India has taken some goodwill measures, such as slashing tariffs on motorcycles and bourbon whisky. Neha Poonia reports.
