United States President Donald Trump’s sweeping 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports took effect on Wednesday (Mar 12), in a bid to level the playing field for the country’s manufacturing sector. Frank Lavin, former Undersecretary for International Trade at the US Commerce Department, tells CNA’s Asia First that the US tariffs can only be seen as a victory by Washington if they are in place for a brief period.
