How Bhojpuri & Biharis became mainstream in Mauritius
Bhojpuri, spoken by Indians from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, became a key language in Mauritius after the abolition of slavery in 1835. British colonizers brought thousands of Indians to work on sugarcane plantations, making them a significant part of the island’s population. By 1861, they formed two-thirds of Mauritius’ population. Bhojpuri became the common language on sugar estates and even a trade language adopted by Chinese and African traders.
