Donald Trump has announced sweeping new global tariffs. These so-called reciprocal tariffs, paid by U.S.-based companies importing goods into the United States, vary by country, ranging from a minimum of 10% to over 40%. To determine the specific rates, the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office applied a formula designed to balance trade deficits between the United States and its trading partners.
Trump has also announced a 10% trade tariff on all imports from the UK.
Trump dubbed the move ‘Liberation Day’ and claimed that his expansive use of tariffs would cause factories to move production back to the United States, ushering in a golden era for the U.S. economy.
