Large crowds have welcomed the M23 rebel alliance to the provincial capital of Bukavu, with some even taking selfies with armed fighters. The rebel coalition, Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), which includes the M23 armed group, told CNN that it has control of eastern Congo’s second-largest city since February 16. The DRC’s Ministry of Communication and Media confirmed the takeover in a post on X.
