Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te has once again escalated cross-strait tensions, labeling the Chinese mainland a "foreign hostile force" and openly revealing his separatist agenda by reiterating claims of Taiwan’s so-called sovereignty. Speaking in Taipei on March 13—just a day before the 20th anniversary of China’s Anti-Secession Law—Lai even suggested reinstating a military court system to punish those he deems "pro-reunification" with the motherland. So, what’s behind Lai’s provocative rhetoric? How do such inflammatory remarks impact the already delicate cross-strait relations? As the West further stokes tensions—most recently by undermining the one-China principle in a Group of Seven statement—how serious could the consequences be?
