Mazu is the name by which a young woman named Lin Moniang, who lived on southeastern China’s Meizhou Island in the 10th century, came to be known after her death. Lin devoted her life to helping her fellow townspeople and died while attempting to rescue survivors from a shipwreck. For centuries, Mazu has been China’s most revered sea goddess, and as a focal point of the country’s maritime culture, she has been a link between people across the Taiwan Straits. On the eighth day of the first month on the lunar calendar, the golden effigy of Mazu is carried in procession around Meizhou. The event attracts tens of thousands of visitors, including many from the Taiwan region. Watch the CGTN documentary "The Journey of the Goddess" and discover more about the powerful cultural ties that connect people across the Taiwan Straits.
