As Chinese pull out all the stops to celebrate the Spring Festival, the holiday economy shifts into high gear. The Year of the Snake kicked off with a mega blockbuster enjoying a record box office. Holiday ticket sales soared to over 9.5 billion yuan (around $1.303 billion), with a staggering 187 million moviegoers packing theaters, between January 28 and February 4. The Chinese film industry has been focused on weaving traditional culture into modern storytelling, with the film "Nezha 2" as a standout. It has surpassed 6.2 billion yuan in box office revenue in the Chinese mainland, topping "Avengers: Endgame" in the North American box office. And, it has entered the top two in the global box office rankings for a single market. The movie became China’s highest-grossing film ever, evidence of how traditional Chinese mythology is finding new life in modern cinema. What are the main drivers behind the strong holiday box office performance? For deeper insights, CGTN’s Tian Wei talked to Dede Nickerson, who’s a producer and advisor at DLN Media, and Teng Jimeng, a senior research fellow at the Center for China and Globalization.
