In this video, we visit the settlements of the Deang ethnic group on the southwestern border of China during the Spring Festival!
Men, women, and children gather under the big banyan tree in Yunnan Province, and playing with millstone-shaped tops that stir up a wave of joy. The large tops, carrying thousands of years of intangible cultural heritage, have become the Deang people’s unique New Year symbol.
Yao Shanglong, whose Deang name is A Sai, a 26-year-old from Baiyan Village in Zhenkang County, proudly tells the story of his hometown’s transformation. In the past, people mainly grew vegetables and grains and lived in dilapidated bamboo and thatch houses. Now, with the support of government policies, every family lives in a modern house, and the sugarcane and nut industries are booming.
Ashuse culture, which integrates songs, dances and music, is also a national intangible cultural heritage. It has been passed down for more than 2,000 years. The Deang people spontaneously start performing it whenever they want, vividly showing the joys and sorrows of life.
